What is a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is a procedure where we remove a tooth from your mouth. This is a routine procedure that we have performed hundreds of times. You will be able to eat and speak normally following a tooth extraction, just make sure to follow our post-procedure instructions carefully to avoid issues like an infection.

Why do teeth need to be extracted?

There are a wide variety of reasons that teeth end up needing to be extracted. The most common reasons that teeth need to be extracted are:

•	Severe decay
•	Periodontal (gum) disease
•	A tooth that has been cracked or chipped in a way that is not repairable
•	Poor positioning of a tooth (wisdom teeth)
•	Teeth that are non-functional or function poorly

No matter what the reason, we are highly experienced when it comes to removing teeth that have no further business being in your mouth. Tooth extraction is important because it removes problem teeth that could cause damage to other teeth or structures in your mouth.

Tooth Extraction Procedure

There are two different kinds of tooth extraction - simple extractions and surgical extractions. Below you will find a description of each.

Simple Tooth Extractions

Simple tooth extractions are performed when we can easily grip the crown of the tooth. We grip the crown of the tooth with a tool called an elevator and gently rock it back and forth until it can be plucked from your mouth. Sometimes simple extractions can turn into surgical extractions if the tooth breaks in the process of the extraction.

Surgical Tooth Extractions

A surgical extraction is done when we have to make an incision in the gums to gain access to your tooth. Impacted wisdom teeth and canines often require a surgical extraction. Once the tooth has been removed, we will suture the site close and give you some post-operative instructions to follow to ensure the site doesn’t become infected.
