More over-the-counter products like toothpaste and mouthwash are being advertised as having teeth whitening benefits, making our patients more aware that their smile could receive a boost from having their teeth whitened. What does teeth whitening involve?
We offer professional take-home teeth whitening to our patients, which require two trips to our office to complete. During the first trip to our office, we will take an impression of your mouth that we will use to create custom trays for your teeth. These trays are made to hold a teeth whitening gel that we will supply you with, and you will wear either once or twice a day.
During the second visit to our office, we will have you try on the trays so that we can ensure that they fit properly and make adjustments as needed. We will give you the whitening solution and give you instructions on how to apply it to achieve the best results. You can wear the trays either twice a day for a half hour at a time or one time a day, overnight. You will vary the amount of time and how frequently you wear the trays depending on how much you want to whiten your teeth.
Are over-the-counter whitening solutions worth it?
Many patients ask us if over-the-counter whitening solutions like toothpaste and mouthwash are worth it, and usually, our answer is “no.” When tooth whitening solutions are applied, there are two factors that matter when it comes to whitening teeth - strength of the whitening agent, and time the teeth are exposed to the whitening agent. In OTC solutions like toothpaste and mouthwash, the whitening agent needs to be rather weak so that they can meet FDA guidelines, and the amount of time that they are applied to the teeth is minimal. The most effective OTC whitening solutions are the whitening strips and gels, but they can be messy and expensive when you compare their results to our professional solution.
