What Composite Fillings Are
You might not have heard the term “composite fillings, ” but you have probably heard of their more common name, “tooth colored fillings.” Composite fillings took the place of what used to be the most common filling material, amalgam (silver/metallic) fillings not so long ago. Since they became more commonly used, composite fillings have proven to be good for patient’s oral health on top of looking great in their smile. Composite fillings are comprised of glass, plastic, and a resin that we mix here in our office to perfectly match the aesthetic of your teeth.
Dental Bonding
This composite material is useful for finishing fillings, but it has some other great uses as well; it can repair damaged teeth! In a process known as dental bonding, we can repair chipped and cracked teeth that would otherwise appear unsightly and detract from your oral health. Dental bonding can quickly and cost-effectively repair your teeth.
The Composite Filling Process
When you come in to have a composite filling placed at Hillsboro Dental Center, you can count on the highest quality work and a quick turn-around time. Our experienced staff and Dr. John T. Roberts and Dr. Cheryl Hansen are well-versed in placing these fillings and will make you comfortable throughout the experience. The first step in the process is ensuring your comfort by administering a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth. Once we are certain that the area is adequately numb, we can begin removing the decay in the tooth with the dental drill.
Once all the decay has been removed we will use a special antibacterial rinse to ensure the sterility of the tooth; then we will apply the composite compound to the area that was drilled. While the resin is being placed, it has the same consistency of clay or putty, allowing us to mold it to the grooves of your teeth. When the composite material has been molded to the shape of your tooth, we will set it in place, hardening it with ultraviolet light.
Composite fillings are wonderful because they require much less of your healthy tooth to be removed when compared to their predecessors (amalgam fillings). This allows us to leave as much of your healthy tooth intact as possible.
